The October Palace

Buy The October Palace

Jane Hirshfield's long-awaited third collection of poetry explores the ways that radiance dwells most truly in the ordinary, the difficult, and the plain. The poems address subjects ranging from the importance of sabbath moments in which nothing seems to happen and the love between two aged horses to Lavoisier's discovery of modern chemistry and the 1989 velvet revolutions of Eastern Europe. Grounded in a series of meditations upon the life of the feeling heart in the world - a heart envisioned as an almost independent being, whose own needs and desires require of us integration, acceptance, and finally praise - The October Palace is contemplative and sensuous, intellectual and emotional, philosophical and musical, and, above all, serious in its encounter with precisely experienced and deeply questioned life.

Frances has dug herself a hole of boredom and misery with her lifeless job and her loveless marriage. She begins to combat her lack of identity by creating a wild nightlife character for herself to play. Frances is soon clubhopping through Boston, taking home a different man every night in this darkly comedic study of identity crisis. Todd Verow directed, wrote, and plays a principle role in his follow up to the independent success, FRISK.

The Testament

Nate O'Riley, a high-powered D.C. lawyer and recovering alcoholic, must fight both a morally corrupt legal system and his own recurring addiction to find Rachel Lane, a young woman working as doctor deep in the Brazilian wetlands. Rachel has inherited a multi-billion-dollar fortune, but with her other siblings clamoring for a piece of the pie, she unknowingly needs Nate's help to fend them off. But Nate's journey to Brazil becomes a greater, more dangerous adventure than he expected, eventually proving that he needs her help much more than she needs his. An independent, self-assured woman, Rachel opens Nate's eyes to a world he had never known: a world devoid of corruption, money and liquor, and instead, filled with faith and spirituality. A Publishers Weekly best-seller for 31 weeks, THE TESTAMENT was the magazine's longest-running fiction hardcover best-seller in 1999.

Ginger Snaps (DVD)

Brigitte (Emily Perkins) and Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) are unusual sisters. For a school project they take pictures of each other in various suicide poses that look frighteningly realistic. No other students will talk to them. Ginger is almost sixteen, Brigitte a year younger, but they are in the same classes, and neither of them has gotten her period yet. They do virtually everything together--in fact, their motto is Together Forever--until one night Ginger gets attacked by the Beast of Bailey Downs, which previously had been killing and eviscerating dogs. And Ginger then begins to change....
John Fawcett's debut feature film is everything a good horror film should be--creepy, weird, oddly funny, sexy, and very bloody, with its conclusion taking place on Halloween night. Michael Shields's moody score lofts above every scene like dark shadows about to envelop the characters. Perkins and Isabelle are outstanding as the two morbid Fitzgerald sisters with a taste for death. This... Ginger Snaps (DVD)
